About Us

Our Policies

At The Ability Company, our policies reflect who we are: Indigenous-owned, values-led, and rooted in dignity, inclusion, sustainability, and cultural respect. These living documents guide how we show up — for our community, our collaborators, and the land we walk on.

We begin with our Reconciliation Includes Us Framework — a foundational commitment that informs everything we do. It holds space for truth, accountability, and action, and deserves to be seen, felt, and engaged with fully.

Following that, you’ll find our operational policies — each one a reflection of our values in practice. These documents are not static; they grow as we grow, and evolve as we listen.

Our Reconciliation Includes Us Framework is the foundation of everything that follows. It reflects our commitment to truth, accountability, and Indigenous sovereignty — not as abstract ideals, but as daily practice. We invite you to read it with care, and to walk alongside us in its living journey.

  • We started The Ability Company because we believe accessibility should be the default—not the exception. Whether we’re designing digital tools, hosting events, consulting with organizations, or shaping inclusive awareness, our mission is to make the world easier to navigate for everyone.

We’re based in Ontario, Canada, and we take that seriously. We do our best to follow the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), WCAG 2.1 AA standards, and most importantly, we listen to real people with lived experience. Because accessibility isn’t just about compliance—it’s about care.

    What Accessibility Means to Us

Accessibility means creating spaces, services, and experiences that work for people of all abilities. That includes:

    • Websites and apps that work with screen readers, voice control, and keyboard navigation.

    • Physical spaces that are barrier-free, with clear signage and accessible washrooms.

    • Events that offer ASL interpretation, captioning, and sensory-friendly options.

    • Communications that are clear, respectful, and available in multiple formats.

We don’t wait until the end to “check for accessibility”—we build it in from the start.

    How We Work

Inside our company, accessibility is part of our culture:

    • Our hiring process is inclusive and barrier-free.

    • Accommodations are offered proactively and confidentially.

    • Our team receives training on disability inclusion and accessible practices.

    • Internal tools and workflows are designed to support different needs.

We also make sure our support channels are accessible—whether you reach out by email, phone, chat, or text.

    Service Animals

Service animals are always welcome in any space we operate. No paperwork. No hassle. Just respect.

    Feedback Matters

We’re always learning, and we want to hear from you. If you’ve got feedback—good, bad, or in-between—please reach out:

    • Email: connect@theabilitycompany.com

    • Online feedback form.

    • Employees can also share feedback anonymously through our internal portal.

    • We review everything, act on what needs fixing, and share updates on what’s changed. Accessibility is a journey, and we’re committed to moving forward.

    Advocacy & Collaboration

We don’t just build inclusive experiences—we advocate for a more inclusive world. That means working with disability organizations, community leaders, and policy makers to raise the bar for accessibility across all industries.

  • At The Ability Company, we believe privacy is a right, not a privilege. Whether you're using our services, attending an event, or just browsing our site, we want you to feel confident that your information is safe, respected, and never exploited.

We’re based in Ontario, Canada, and we follow all applicable privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). We also design our practices to reflect our values: transparency, simplicity, and trust.

What We Collect (And What We Don’t)

We only collect minimal personal information, and only when it’s necessary. This may include:

    • Your name and email address (for communication or receipts).

    • Feedback or survey responses.

    • Accessibility preferences (if you choose to share them).

We do not collect health information, and we do not store sensitive personal data like banking details or credit card numbers.

    • We don’t collect or store financial credentials.

    • We may ask for your name, email, and transfer details to confirm payment and issue receipts.

    • Billing info is used only for processing payments and meeting legal or tax obligations.

If we ever expand to other payment methods, we’ll update this policy and ensure those systems meet strict privacy and security standards.

    • Dismissive or ableist language or behavior.

    • Sharing confidential information without consent.

Depending on the situation, we may take actions such as:

    • A conversation or reminder.

    • Temporary suspension from participation.

    • Ending a working relationship.

We believe in restorative approaches when possible, but we also prioritize safety, trust, and integrity.

    Our Commitment

As co-founders, we lead by example. This Code of Conduct isn’t just a document—it’s a promise to ourselves, to each other, and to everyone who joins us. Together, we’re creating spaces where people feel respected, valued, and empowered.

  • At The Ability Company, diversity, equity, and inclusion aren’t just ideals—they’re the foundation of everything we do. As co-founders, we’re committed to creating spaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and empowered to participate fully.

    • We listen to feedback and adapt based on real experiences.

    • We seek out diverse voices in decision-making, partnerships, and storytelling.

    Accountability

As co-founders, we hold ourselves accountable to these principles. We also invite anyone who works with us to uphold them. If concerns arise, we’re committed to listening, learning, and taking action.

    A Living Policy

This DEI Policy is a living document. As we grow, we’ll continue to revisit and refine it to reflect new insights, challenges, and opportunities. Inclusion is a journey—and we’re here for it.

  • Honouring All Cultures, Rooted in Respect

At The Ability Company, we believe that culture is not just heritage—it’s identity, story, and connection. As an Indigenous-owned business, we honour our own teachings while also embracing the rich diversity of cultures that shape our communities.

This policy affirms our commitment to cultural respect, safety, and inclusion across all our work.

    • Curiosity & Humility—we ask, we listen, we learn

We acknowledge that cultural protocols vary across communities, and we commit to honouring them with integrity.

    Indigenous Protocols

    As an Indigenous-owned organization, we:

    • Engage Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural Advisors with proper protocol.

    • Offer tobacco, gifts, or honoraria when requesting teachings or ceremony.

    • Make space for land-based learning, storytelling, and traditional knowledge.

    • Respect diversity across Nations, families, and teachings—never assuming uniformity.

    Multicultural Protocols

    • Language and naming conventions—we ask how people want to be addressed.

    • Religious and spiritual observances—we accommodate prayer, fasting, and sacred days.

    • Dress and symbols—we respect cultural attire and expressions of identity.

    • Food customs—we consider dietary needs tied to culture or faith.

    • Communication styles—we adapt to different norms around eye contact, tone, and formality.

We seek guidance from community members when engaging with cultural practices outside our own.

    What This Looks Like

    • Asking “Is there a protocol we should follow?” before events or collaborations.

    • Creating culturally safe spaces where people feel seen, heard, and respected.

    • Avoiding tokenism or appropriation—culture is not a costume or a trend.

    • Being open to correction and committed to growth.

Culture is dynamic. So is this policy. We will continue to learn, adapt, and evolve based on feedback from the communities we serve.

    Our Pledge

    • We honour culture as a living force.

    • We walk with respect.

    • We listen with humility.

    • We act with care.

    • Respect for all living beings and the land we walk on.

    • Reciprocity—giving back as much as we take.

    • Responsibility—acting with care, intention, and accountability.

    • Relationality—understanding that everything is. connected: people, land, water, spirit.

These values are reflected in the Medicine Wheel, which reminds us to live in balance—spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally.

    What This Looks Like

    • We prioritize low-impact practices that honour the land and reduce harm.

    • We strive to work with ethical and Indigenous-owned suppliers whenever possible.
