The Holiday Load: When Caregiving Doesn’t Pause — It Piles On

The holidays are often described as a time to slow down, to gather, to rest. But for caregivers like me, it’s not about winding down — it’s about stepping up.

I’m not just a caregiver. I work full-time, teach theatre, support The Ability Company, and I’m always dreaming up new ideas. The holidays don’t pause any of that — they add to it. There’s more to do, more to coordinate, more to create. And while it’s a season of joy, it’s also a season of juggling.

Caregiving during the holidays means being the one who’s cleaning, decorating, cooking, organizing — often behind the scenes. It’s about creating moments of joy for someone else, even when your own energy is stretched. And yes, it’s fulfilling. But it’s also a lot.

This is technically my time off work, but it rarely feels like a break. Between the hustle and the heart, I have to carve out space to rest — because when it’s go-go-go, it’s easy to forget that caregivers need care too. By the time the holidays are over, I’m grateful for the memories… and ready for a nap.

Still, I wouldn’t trade it. Being part of someone’s circle — helping them celebrate in ways that feel good and accessible — is a gift. It’s not about pity. It’s about partnership. It’s about showing up with love, with intention, and with a deep understanding of what it means to support someone fully.

So this season, look beyond the sparkle. Notice the people who are making it all happen. The ones who are quietly carrying more, not because they have to, but because they choose to.

Be kind. Not just to strangers in line, but to the caregivers in your life. We don’t get time off — but your compassion, your help, and your presence can make the load a little lighter.
