A Legacy of Connection

Honouring Joshua Andrew Beer

Josh lived a life filled with joy, music, laughter, and connection. Although he could not speak, Josh connected in a way that was so inspiring — he listened deeply, felt fully, and responded with a smile that could light up any room. His laugh was contagious, his presence grounding, and his appreciation for people showed in every tap of his tray.

Josh loved when his brother Matt would play on the guitar or his brother Adam, played on the drums. But perhaps his favourite musical moments were when his dad played the accordion. Even his mom got involved by singing and he even tolerated the occasional Patsy Cline song. He touched countless lives without ever realizing the impact he made. He was a great listener, a gentle soul, and someone who made everyone around him feel like family.

Make‑A‑Wish once sent Josh and his family on a 10‑day, all‑expenses‑paid trip to Disney World. For Josh’s family, it was absolutely amazing — a time filled with joy, love, and memories they carry forever.

Josh passed away unexpectedly in March 2025 and on May 8, 2026, he would have turned 40. In honour of that milestone — and the love he shared so freely — this legacy collaboration is being released on his birthday and will remain available throughout 2026.

All profits will be donated to the Make‑A‑Wish Foundation, chosen by Josh’s parents, in gratitude of the unforgettable gift they received.

Jen’s Connection with Josh

From 2003 until nearly 2011, Jen had the privilege of being part of Josh’s life as an evening Family Support Worker. Those years were filled with walks, music, dancing, singing, and so much laughter — time intentionally created so Josh’s parents could take a break, knowing he was surrounded by care and joy.

Jen was welcomed not just as a support worker, but as part of the family. The Beer family made that clear every step of the way. Josh had a way of making people feel at home, and his smile — especially during their end‑of‑shift karaoke sessions — was unforgettable.

Josh will always hold a special place in Jen’s heart. This collaboration is an honour — for Josh, for his family, for Make‑A‑Wish, and for everyone who lives by the truth that Connections Matter every single day.

A Shirt That Tells His Story

Josh’s life was about the famous saying of Live. Laugh. Love. Those words reflect how he experienced life and how meaningful connection was to him.

The design uses a tic‑tac‑toe grid to reflect the importance of connection, and each square has a word that shares a piece of Josh’s spirit and the ways he connected with others. Caregivers, nurses, and friends, all became part of Josh’s circle. The way he connected with everyone in his life is something we can all learn from. The red heart in the center of the grid symbolizes how deeply he was loved and the love he so openly gave to others.

Connection matters. Never assume that someone with a disability does not understand, feel, or notice the world around them. Josh did not use words, but he communicated constantly — through laughter, love, and the way he came alive through touch, music, and shared moments.

Josh connected in ways that went far beyond speech, and his life is a reminder that understanding is not measured by how someone communicates, but by how willing we are to connect with one another.

At its heart, inclusion is about recognizing that connection shows up differently for everyone. When we slow down, let go of assumptions, and meet people where they are, we create space for real belonging — the kind Josh so freely gave to everyone around him.
